Choose shingles as part of a whole roof
Shingle choice starts with the look you want and the roof that will carry it. Architectural, three-tab and designer profiles create different patterns, while impact ratings describe product-specific test performance.
Those differences matter alongside the installation. The deck, underlayment, flashing, starter, attachment and ridge details still need to work as a connected roof system. No shingle label makes those parts optional.

Shingle choices for a Belton roof
A style or rating answers only part of the material decision.
| Option | What it changes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tab | A flatter repeated pattern across the roof. | Compatibility with the roof, product availability and repair matching. |
| Architectural | A layered dimensional profile and broad appearance choices. | Color, profile, fastening and the full installed system. |
| Impact-rated | A product with a stated impact-test classification. | The actual rating and product terms; no roof is made damage-proof by a label. |
| Designer | A heavier or more pronounced appearance depending on the product. | The assembly requirements and material-specific price. |
Shingle color and roof repair matching
A full replacement gives you a chance to consider the roof with the brick, siding and trim. A small repair has a different task: the product needs to fit the existing size, profile and installation details.
Existing shingles weather over time, so even compatible new material can show a color difference. An appearance mismatch is a conversation to have alongside the more important question of whether the repair connects soundly to the roof around it.

The roof system below the shingle choice
These parts affect performance whatever finish you select.
- A sound deck and correct fastening
The covering needs a suitable base and the selected product’s attachment. Hidden deck damage changes the work before new material is installed.
- Water protection and transitions
Underlayment, valley/eave protection and flashing need compatible overlaps around pipes, walls and other interruptions. Surface sealant cannot replace a missing detail.
- Ventilation and product terms
The roof/attic airflow path and any product requirements belong in the actual assembly. Warranty or insurance terms come from the party offering them and the specific conditions.
